About 200 years before Alanna is born, when women were still allowed to be knights, Rebaka Cooper, an orphan commoner, wants to join the police force, or the Provost’s Dogs, as they are called in Corus. Beka must undergo many trials. She must make new friends, capture old friends, and gain the acceptance of her Dogs.
A murderer is on the move and Beka keeps hearing the voices of the dead, crying for their families. If Beka reveals that she can hear them, she may become a suspect, but if she does not, more innocent people will be killed. Can Beka overcome her shyness and uncertainty before she, herself, is killed?
